Day 19

Left Tucumcari, NM at 6:30 am and the temperature was 58 degrees. We reached the Texas State Line in about an hour. It was foggy about 10 miles into the trip but the sun finally came through and burnt it off. You can see in some of the pictures that they got rain sometime during the night and some places quite a bit. We haven't had to put on our rain gear since we left Custer, SD on August 8th.
We stopped to see Americas largest free standing cross. It is 190 feet tall and can be seen 20 miles away. It is located just off I-40 in Groom, TX. It also has several bronze statues that are around it.
We were on and off Route 66 all day. The wind was blowing real hard and we would get off I-40 once in a while to get away from the wind a bit. The steady blowing isn't as bad as the sudden hard gust.
In McLean, TX we went to the Devil's Rope and Route 66 Museum. It is an old Sears & Roebuck factory that was given to the town for use as a museum. I didn't know what Devil's Rope was until we stopped there. It is barbed wire and they had some really good displays of barbed wire, Route66, the Dust Bowl and other things. There is also a post in a rock that came from NYS. It is worth the visit if you are passing by.
We crossed into Oklahoma at Texola, OK and had a great lunch at a roadside restaurant that was full of antiques.
Then we stopped at Elk City, OK to check out the Route 66 museum there. It has 3 other museums combined with it but we only went to the Route 66 part of it. It is another worth while stop if you ever get the chance.
We still rode of and on Route 66 to Weatherford, OK where we are spending the night after a total of 307 miles. We have switched from Super8 to Best Western for some reason. I guess it because they all have everything we need, such as coffee in the lobby, coffee in room, free coffee, ironing board and iron, microwave, refrig, wi-fi, most have guest laundry room and oh did I mention free coffee. :^)

Albert and Susie

PS
I think I forgot to mention that in Oatman Arizona at the Oatman Hotel there is a room that Clark Gable and Carol Lombard spent their honeymoon night in after getting married in Kingman, Arizona.

  4. I THINK THAT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I WOULD HAVE ON A TRIP LIKE THIS IS THAT THE BIKE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HOLD ALL OF THE THINGS I WOULD WANT TO BUY ON THE TRIP. I WOULD HAVE TO RENT A CAR FOR THE RIDE HOME.

I HOPE YOUR SUNNY TRIP STAYS SUUNY THROUGH THE SOUTH AND HAVE A GOOD TRIP

  7. Hi Deb,
    You're not a bad friend. :)
We have pretty comfy Mustang Seats and I have the Butt Buffer. We have only had a few times that our backs bothered us. The wicked winds can really make Albert fight to keep the bike upright and my fight is with staying on. LOL.
Ya we will get together sometime.
Thanks for checking out our blog,
    Susie

  10. Hi,
Albert, You look pretty good in that pink car. You would never get Bob in a pink car. The first year we were married, I had a pink Ford. He drove it a few times to work, and got razzed for beinging you know what. haha...Love, Aunt Peg
Sue, You look really serious about sliding down that fire pole. be careful....

  11. Hey you guys...looks like you are having a great time. To me this is the trip of a lifetime..stories to tell your grandchildre. These pics in TX and OK bring memories...have seen all these landmarks. Chris was stationed at Ft.Sill in Lawton OK and we used to fly to Dallas and drive up to see him or we would meet him in Dallas, but we did alot of sightseeing while we were there. Have fun you guys and stay safe. TC...Sally
