Day 8 Weatherford, OK - Vega, TX 242 miles

Hey Ronn thanks for the shirt and the doo rag! I'm pointing to this is where we are.
Well it must be our leaving time. We left the motel around 6:45 this morning and headed down 66 again. We visited the Route 66 Museum in Elk City, OK and the rest of the day was spent riding around Oklahoma and Texas taking pictures.

We met a women, her son and his wife and two kids in Texas just before McLean, TX. They are from Belgium and touring Route 66 from Chicago - Santa Monica just like us but they are in a van. They love it and the son said he would like to do it on motorcycle some day. We got a picture of them all but the wife. Apparently it was too hot for her so she set in  the van with the air conditioner on. WIMP!!! LOL!

Then we got down the road to McLean and run into them again at the Devil's Rope Museum. FYI devil's rope is barbed wire. It wasn't  open on Sundays, but we had stopped on the way home last year. It is a real interesting place and worth the stop if you are near McLean. We also met a family from Italy it was a father and his son and his son's wife. What a trip that was trying to communicate with them. The son could speak some English, well almost. hahaha. They were going the opposite way on Route 66 from the beginning to the end.

We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch and took some pictures. It is really stupid but sure gets a lot of visitors including us. I bet there were 50 or 60 people coming and going while we were there. A man and woman were sitting beside the road selling cans of spray paint for $10 so people can paint them up. Every once in a while the cars are all painted one color again so the graffiti can start fresh. We didn't buy paint but had a Sharpie. "The Cadillac Ranch, located along the tatters of historic Route 66, was built in 1974, brainchild of Stanley Marsh 3, the helium millionaire who owns the dusty wheat field where it stands. Marsh and The Ant Farm, a San Francisco art collective, assembled used Cadillacs representing the "Golden Age" of American Automobiles (1949 through 1963). The ten graffiti-covered cars are half-buried, nose-down, facing west "at the same angle as the Cheops' pyramids."

So tonight we are in Vega, TX at the Best Western Country Inn on Route 66. We finally got our first motel that really sucks. The air conditioning is about as old as the building and that was built in the 50's and it could use some repairs. It is too bad these place just get let to run down and take in money. So if you are in Vega, TX  heading west and looking for a room, drive another 77 miles and stay in Tucumcari, NM Best Western. We stayed there last year and recommend it. But don't stay here. The best thing I can say is it has a roof on it. Hopefully it don't rain so I can find out if it leaks.  Had to find a place to do laundry too because this place didn't have guest laundry.

Stopped at the Boot Hill Saloon and Grill just down the road from the Best Western and had some great coffee. Susie wasn't hungry but I was.

Anyway.........we are off again tomorrow and will get to Adrian, TX which is the midpoint of Route 66. Not the midpoint of our trip but the halfway point between Chicago and Santa Monica.
Here Andy this is for you:

This is for you Andy!

  4. Peggy cubbear,
It is all part of traveling. You get some great ones and you get some bad ones. We could have went another hour to Tucumcari but didn't want to fight the wind. The meal was good though.
    Take care
